Public Relations (PR) is a practice of creating and maintaining a positive reputation of an organization through strategic communication to build mutually beneficial relationships with the public, clients and customers. A PR’s role is to maintain a positive image of a company and promote the brand image. The main aim of a PR is to promote the brand and maintain healthy relationships with the public, prospective customers, partners, investors, employees and other stakeholders. Public Relations is different than Advertising as the latter deals with paid promotion, while a PR’s job is to promote the brand through various mediums.

A PR personnel should have good contacts with the media so that they can cover and write about the brand, hence promoting the brand and informing people about the company. From writing and distributing press releases, to writing the speeches of renowned people, to analyzing and interpreting the public opinion on the brand and how the mass can be influenced. Dealing with various public groups and other organisations in regard to the set policies. There are various types of PR’s that exist which are:

Type of PR

Description

Media Relations

The PR has to have good contacts with the media channels and reporters who act as their content source and promoter.

Investor Relations

The PR’s job is to handle investors’ events to releasing financial reports, media enquiries and complaints.

Community Relations

The PR has to ensure that the brand image is positive and in the good books of the public by hosting events and campaigns.

Internal Relations

The PR deals with the employees of an organization by cooperating with them during launches, events, reminders and projects.

Customer Relations

A PR has to handle the relations with the Public by conducting surveys and projects to get feedback from the customers, know their attitude towards the brand and how the brand can be improved for their liking.

Marketing Relations

PR’s have to assist the marketing team and salesmen in relation to the product launch, the campaigns, on how to promote brand awareness, the image and positioning.

Public Relations is taught by various Universities and Colleges as it is taught in Journalism and Mass Communication programmes. There are also postgraduate courses which specialize in Public Relations. A career in Public Relations is bright and interesting and the need for professionals in the field is in high demand. Now mostly every company and organization have their PR team and as mentioned above in the types of PRs, a company will want to do everything to promote their brand image and maintaining a positive image.

BA in Journalism and Mass Communication

3-Years

BMM

3-Years

The candidate should have done their Class 12 in any stream from a recognised board and should have secured a minimum of 45% aggregate.

MJMC

2-Years

The candidate should have done their BJMC/BMM/BA in Journalism and Mass Communication or any similar discipline from a recognised University and should have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate.

MA in Journalism and Mass Communication

2-Years

The candidate should have done their BJMC/BMM/BA in Journalism and Mass Communication or any similar discipline from a recognised University and should have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate.

PG Diploma in Public Relations

1-Year

Public Relations Admission Process

Chose University/College: The first step is to search for colleges or universities which are offering courses in Public Relations. Check the fees, the seats offered, eligibility criteria which is set for the course.

Apply for Course: Proceed to apply for admission after getting to know the university offering the programme. Fill up the details as required and pay the application fee. The application forms are available for a limited period of time so the candidate is advised to know the details way in advance.

Mode of Admission: Universities and Colleges will either conduct entrance exams for admission or offer admission through merit. For postgraduate courses, the candidate will have to appear for an entrance exam.

Results: Selected and qualified candidates make the merit list. The student has to get the desired rank and percentage, to be eligible for admission.

Counselling: The candidate will have to appear for the counselling session conducted at the university to book their seat, submit their documents and pay the fees to seal admission.
