Metallurgical Engineering is a domain of engineering that, studies fundamentals of metal processing, extraction and designing along with physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements. It is a science that, gives an understanding of purifying and alloying metals, extraction of metals from their ores and manufacturing useful objects from metals.

Every industry that manufactures, refines, buy and sell metal requires Metallurgical Engineer. In India, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Varanasi was the first to start the Department of Metallurgy in the year 1925. Now, all eminent institutions like IITs, NITs, other Government and Private Universities offer admission to Metallurgical Engineering.

Metallurgical Engineering Courses

Metallurgical Engineering is a wide-ranging course that covers all the aspects of metal extraction, testing of metals, metal refining and processing, etc. Following are the courses available under Metallurgical Engineering:

  • Physical Metallurgy
  • Extractive Metallurgy
  • Mechanical Metallurgy
  • Corrosion Metallurgy
  • Welding Metallurgy

There are two broad categories under Metallurgy i.e. Chemical Metallurgy and Physical Metallurgy. Chemical Metallurgy is primarily concerned with chemical performance of metals, oxidation of metals and their reduction. On the other hand, Physical Metallurgy deals with the physical performance of metals and mechanical & physical properties of metals.

Metallurgical Engineering Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission to Metallurgical Engineering must fulfill the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria is different for Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Metallurgical engineering eligibility criteria for different courses can be seen below.

For Diploma Courses:

  • Candidates must have passed Class 10 or equivalent examination with Mathematics and Science as mandatory subjects from a recognized Board/University.

For Undergraduate Courses:

  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent exam with minimum 50% aggregate marks with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • They should have qualified the entrance examination organized at National/State level or conducted by the any university or institution

For Postgraduate Courses:

  • Candidates must possess bachelor’s degree in the concerned field and a valid GATE score or any other exam accepted by the institute/university.
  • They should have obtained minimum of 60% aggregate marks in their UG degree.
