Also known as corporate law, enterprise law or business law, company law is a legislation that is concerned with the creation, governance and operation of companies and the related rules, regulations, laws and practices.

Simply put, company law addresses all of the legal issues that are faced by a company. Someone who practices company law is the official legal face of the company and looks after all the cases and suits someone files against the company or the company needs to file against.

Company law aids the companies in complying with various regulations in the business environment and ideally should increase the profitability of a company by following the right taxation procedures, avail the tax benefits and maintain the dignity and the reputation of a company.

In short, corporate law is not private law but is a component of public law.

Eligibility Criteria for Company Law

To become a corporate or a company lawyer, the candidate should finish an undergraduate and preferably, a postgraduate course in legislative law – LLB and LLM.

How do you do that?

After finishing XII standard (any subject), a candidate can take admission in a five-year integrated course most commonly along with Bachelor of Arts (BA LLB). Other available courses include BSc LLB, BCom LLB, BBA LLB. Alternatively, there is a three-year LLB course if the candidate is already a graduate (any subject).

A candidate can also opt for a five-year course after XII or three-year course after graduation, based on your marks (merit) or a common entrance test.

A candidate has to clear an entrance exam to get admission in some of the top law colleges in the country. Some of the popular law entrance exams are Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for admission into one of the 19 national law universities (NLU), All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) and Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

Company Law Career, Roles and Salaries Offered

After successfully finishing studies, preferably masters, a candidate can either join a private company, for a law firm or start their own consultancy-based services.

If a candidate had completed their course from one of the NLUs, they can be placed through campus interview. The starting salaries, based on the academics and merit, a candidate can start between Rs 20,000-40,000 per month. With experience, this number could grow to Rs 1 lakh a month.
