Anthropology is the study of humans since man first walked planet earth. It is the scientific study of human behaviour and societies. There are various branches that come under Anthropology such as cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology and visual anthropology. Another common branch of Anthropology is Archeology, which studies human activity through the investigation of physical evidence which is been coming down since History. Anthropology covers various aspects of society such as the tool and techniques man used to survive, how the communication process worked, the beliefs of man and the values.

Anthropology is also studied according to the location i.e. origin. Anthropologists specialize in one or more geographic regions such as West Africa, Latin America, UK, Eastern Europe and Oceania. Anthropologists study the cultural practices of a certain area to the biological behaviour of Mayans. The Indian Anthropological Association is the representative body of professional anthropologists in India.

Branches of Anthropology

Tabulated below are the various branches under Anthropology:

Branch

Meaning

Physical Anthropology

It deals with the evolution of humans with linkage to their primate ancestors. It also studies the differences between various races, humans genetics and adaptions to conditions.

Social Anthropology

This branch deals with the socio-cultural developments of human race from their origin.

Prehistoric Anthropology

Also known as Archaeology, which deals with the study of bones, relics and artefacts. Also, the branch studies the chronological sequence of history based on the findings.

Applied  Anthropology

This branch covers social problems which mankind faced such as the health, outcomes of actions and practical problems.

Objectives of Anthropology

The study of anthropology is a global discipline that involves humanities, social sciences and natural sciences which is built on the origin and evolution of homo sapiens, human physical traits, social and cultural relations, social conflicts, etc. The basic objective or goal of Anthropology is to understand the evolution of mankind right from the origins, the diversity of mankind and social existence across the world.

Anthropology Courses Offered

BA Anthropology: Universities and colleges offer students admission in Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Anthropology. The duration of the programme is three years. Students who want to pursue a BA in Anthropology need to have done their class 12 from a recognised board. A student from any stream is eligible.

MA Anthropology: Universities and colleges offer students a Master of Arts (MA) in Anthropology. The duration of the programme is two years. Students who want to pursue a course in MA in Anthropology, need to have done their graduation in the same field or similar subject from a recognised university.

BSc Anthropology: Universities and colleges offer students BSc in Anthropology, which is a three-year programme. Candidates need to have done their class 12 in Science from a recognised board and should have secured a minimum of 55% to be eligible for the course.

MSc Anthropology: Universities and Colleges offer MSc in Anthropology. The programme is a two-year course and students who want to take up the course, need to have done their BA in Anthropology or in the same field, or, should have done their BSc in Anthropology.

Anthropology Admission Process

Students need to follow the below-mentioned process which is as follows:

Chose University/College: The first priority is to search for colleges or universities which are offering courses in Anthropology. It is advisable to check the fees, the seats offered, eligibility criteria that are set for the course before applying straight away.

Apply for Course: Once the aspirant has identified the university offering the course, proceed to apply for admission in the university. Fill up the details as required and pay the application fee. The application forms are available for a limited period of time so the candidate is advised to know the details way in advance.

Appear for an Entrance Exam: Some universities and colleges conduct entrance exams for undergraduate programmes, while some offer admission based on merit. For postgraduate courses, entrance exams are conducted.

Results: Students who make the merit list are eligible for admission. The student has to get the desired rank and percentage, to be eligible for admission.

Counselling: The candidate will have to appear for the counselling session conducted at the university to book their seat, submit their documents and pay the fees to seal admission.
